Review: The Green Inferno

Vegetarians beware, this movie is not for the faint of heart. The story starts out introducing us to our main character who just happens to be the daughter of an important figure in the United Nations. We follow her as she meets a group of activists that convince her it is a good idea to go protest a corrupt company that is about to destroy the Amazon and slaughter its inhabitants. Always a good idea! Without spoiling anything I’ll just say that some of the groups’ intentions are not as pure as they seem and her journey to save the Amazon does not go as planned.

The Green Inferno Cannibal

I have a pretty high tolerance for gore in horror movies having been a fan of the genre since I was a child. With that said, this movie absolutely put my tolerance to the test. Mr. Roth had me squirming in my chair and covering my eyes one minute, and then had me laughing out loud the next.

Also, It is very refreshing that the entire story is not just a group of cannibals tearing people limb from limb. Don’t get me wrong, that is a lot o the movie, but we aren’t even introduced to the cannibals until about 30 minutes into the story. We are given the opportunity to get to know the characters and to develop feelings for them before witnessing them thrown to the wolves….or humans in this case.

The Green Inferno

In summary, the movie is a lot more fun than you may think from the previews so grab some friends, grab some barf bags (just kidding) and go see it this weekend. Let me know what you think!

Review: The Gift

I finally had the chance last night to see “The Gift.”  I didn’t exactly have an expectation because I didn’t read enough about it to have the plot spoiled for me. Here is what I knew going in: The ending is supposed to shock me.

The ending MAY have shocked me except for one small problem.  I figured out what was going to happen about half way through.  There was one MAJOR hint that I am surprised no one else caught on to.  And they even revisited this hint at one point making it even more obvious to me.   In fact, I think this was the only part of the movie that I found to be shocking…the fact that it actually fooled people!

My other problem was the acting.  Jessica Hall did a great job, however I just could not believe Jason Bateman.   When he was trying to be funny–he was funny.  But when he was trying to be angry or scared I just couldn’t buy it.  (Potential spoiler alert)  Honestly, at the end when he was in the hospital did you think that his performance was believable?  I rolled my eyes.

So, if you are looking for a slow paced drama this is the movie for you.  If you are looking for a horror/thriller…steer clear.  2/5 stars
